As is well known, a correct bite determines not only a beautiful smile but the health of the entire dental and jaw system. Specialists recommend assessing the bite at an early age, when it is easier to correct. To understand whether a child has bite problems, an examination by an orthodontist is needed.
If anomalies are identified, the specialist will select suitable correction options. Dental diagnostics for a child before orthodontic treatment is an essential stage. Without it, it's impossible to plan the therapy and guarantee an excellent result.
Orthodontic diagnostics accomplishes an important task: to detect bite defects and to achieve functional and aesthetic harmony after treatment. Only thorough orthodontic diagnostics will show how a child's temporomandibular joint works, where the teeth are located and how they can be moved. Without diagnostics it's impossible to make braces, plates or aligners.
- Visual examination (the doctor assesses the condition of the teeth and soft tissues, the symmetry of the smile, how the rows of teeth meet, and the work of the facial and jaw muscles and joints)
- Hardware diagnostics (may include a panoramic image, a teleradiograph, CBCT, condylography, diagnostics in an articulator and other studies)
- Obtaining a three-dimensional model of the jaws (based on moulds or the results of an intraoral scan)
- Photo protocol (photographs of the patient from different angles, with the mouth open/closed)
The orthodontist will say exactly which studies are needed as part of preparing for orthodontic treatment. But as a rule hardware orthodontic diagnostics include:
- Panoramic image (an image with a wider field of view, capturing both jaws with the teeth and the tissues around them)
- Teleradiograph (an image of the skull in different projections, showing the position of the jaws and teeth relative to each other)
- CBCT / computed tomography (a layer-by-layer detailed image of all the tissues of the dental and jaw system, the facial bones, the paranasal sinuses and the temporomandibular joint)
- Diagnocat (an AI system that looks for anomalies from the images and creates a 3D model of the dental and jaw system)
- TMJ condylography (reflects, in motion, the work of the temporomandibular joint, which directly affects the bite)
- Diagnostics in an articulator (shows how the teeth of the two jaws meet and what the ideal position of the lower jaw is)
