About the service

Ортопантомограмма

In paediatric dentistry, quality diagnostics is the fundamental basis for successful and safe treatment. Our clinic offers a reliable and modern method of hardware examination that helps treating doctors see hidden inflammatory processes and conditions at the earliest stages. The innovative medical approach guarantees that every young patient will feel as comfortable as possible. We turn the visit to the doctor into a safe adventure, completely ruling out fear, stress and discomfort. An OPG is the gold standard for assessing the overall health of the dental and jaw apparatus before beginning therapeutic or orthodontic procedures.

What is a children's panoramic dental image?

A survey X-ray is a basic study that makes it possible to visualise the overall condition of the dental and jaw system.

This format of examination is performed very quickly and completely without discomfort for the little one. A special high-tech digital device smoothly scans the jaw, moving around the patient's head, which makes it possible to obtain a flat 2D image. As a result the dentist sees the condition of the whole mouth in detail: the condition of the baby teeth, the position of the buds of the permanent teeth, and the structure of the maxillary sinuses and temporomandibular joints.

Why a child is given an OPG: indications

An OPG should be ordered for a child in a number of important clinical situations:

  • The first OPG image is recommended at 4 years old to diagnose the overall condition of the child's dental and jaw system and detect hidden conditions
  • When there is delayed eruption of the permanent incisors and premolars.
  • After severe knocks and mechanical facial injuries.
  • To detect deep, multiple decay.

This diagnostic step helps to avoid serious complications in time and preserve a healthy smile.

Monitoring the buds of the permanent teeth

Deep beneath the baby teeth, in the jawbone tissue, the buds of the permanent teeth are actively forming. The orthodontist carefully assesses from the image exactly how the new teeth are growing, whether they have enough free space for unobstructed eruption and whether there is congenital adentia (the complete or partial absence of buds). This makes it possible to correct jaw growth in time. The doctor also assesses the symmetry of development of the left and right sides of the face, which is critically important for the aesthetics of the profile in the future.

Treatment planning with the orthodontist

Before starting professional orthodontic treatment and fitting braces, aligners or plates, the doctor must draw conclusions solely on the basis of strict objective data. In children's dentistry a survey X-ray is an essential foundation for competent bite correction. Without such imaging it's impossible to calculate the correct path for moving the roots.

Diagnosing hidden conditions

Insidious decay processes very often hide on the contact (lateral) surfaces or deep under the gum margin. An aggressive hidden inflammatory process can run without symptoms for a long time and affect the root of an individual tooth, forming granulomas and cysts invisible to the eye. Timely detection of such hidden foci reliably protects the patient from complex therapeutic intervention and premature removal.

How safe is it for the child?

Many responsible parents worry about whether it's harmful to do an OPG on a child at such an early age. We can fully reassure you: the level of radiation exposure from a modern digital visiograph is minimal and comparable to the ordinary daily background radiation from the screen of a household smartphone or monitor, and is also carefully monitored and documented by our radiologists. The whole scanning procedure takes a minimum of time. For children's fragile bodies this is a completely safe and necessary study.

Feature of our equipment Benefit for the young patient
Paediatric scanning mode Significantly reduced radiation dose, adapted to the age
High speed of data capture Scanning lasts seconds, the little one doesn't need to sit still for long
Individual protective gear Mandatory use of a shielding lead apron and collar

How does an OPG differ from other images?

A classic targeted X-ray is always aimed at detecting a local, pinpoint problem (it shows just 1–2 teeth in detail). A full panoramic image, in turn, lets the dentist assess the entire upper and lower jaw as a whole in a single frame. If the treating doctor needs to draw the most precise and comprehensive conclusion about the upcoming work with the teeth on both jaws at once, a survey orthopantomogram is the only correct and informative choice.
