Brace systems are structures used to correct the bite and the position of specific teeth. If braces are fitted to the inner side of the row of teeth, they are called lingual. As with ordinary braces, here the teeth move thanks to an arch with a memory effect.
It is connected to the braces, each of which is fixed to a separate tooth. Fitting lingual braces to children is often indicated in the case of a reverse bite, a narrowed dental row, fillings on the front side of it, or teeth shifted to the inner side.
Such braces are indicated for older children and teenagers. Lingual braces are made only of metal. They are selected or made individually. This raises their cost compared with ordinary metal braces.
Because of where they are placed, hygiene for lingual braces is harder. The braces need to be cleaned regularly using an orthodontic toothbrush, interdental brushes and an irrigator. Sometimes professional hygiene is indicated. When a decision is made to fit lingual braces, the diet changes. During treatment there is a ban on very hard and sticky foods, for example toffee.
During the adaptation period speech may be impaired and salivation may increase. #FORM_CALL#In terms of fixing the arch, lingual brace systems are divided into ligature and self-ligating. In self-ligating ones the arch that creates the force needed to move the teeth is fixed in a lock on each brace. In ligature ones the arch is held in place by a little elastic (a ligature).
In general, self-ligating systems cost more than ligature ones. They are also easier to care for (the little elastics increase the time spent cleaning the teeth). The orthodontist decides which type of lingual braces to choose for children in each specific case, depending on the complexity of the condition.
