The children's dental clinic Inwhite Medical Kids offers professional and painless treatment of periodontitis in children. This condition is a serious infectious disease in which purulent inflammation goes beyond the tooth and begins to spread rapidly to the surrounding tissue (the periodontium). Our main mission is to ensure the psychological comfort of the young patient and provide top-class treatment to reliably preserve the health of the mouth.
The main reason periodontitis begins to develop in a child is deep decay or acute pulpitis that wasn't treated in time. The infection freely penetrates deep into the canals. The specifics of periodontitis in children's baby teeth is that the destructive process runs several times faster than in adult patients. The anatomical structure is such that in children the roots of the teeth are wider and the surrounding bone structure is less dense and more permeable.
In dental practice, rapid damage can often occur against a background of the slightest drop in general immunity (for example, after an acute respiratory infection). It's worth remembering that when inflammation develops in children around the baby teeth, the infectious flora easily moves further. So saving baby teeth is by no means a parental whim, but a strict medical necessity.
Self-treatment is categorically forbidden if this condition is suspected:
- You must not apply warming compresses to a swollen cheek.
- You must not prescribe antibiotics yourself without a doctor's examination.
- You must not put off a visit to the dentist, hoping the tooth will stop hurting on its own.
Heat only speeds up the multiplication of bacteria and provokes the development of an abscess that can break into the soft tissue of the face.
The clinical picture of the disease can differ significantly depending on the current stage and form of the condition. In dentistry, acute and chronic types of the infection's course are distinguished.
The very first symptom the child usually complains of is sharp, throbbing pain when biting down on hard food. The patient has a persistent feeling that the problem tooth has “grown”, moved out of the jaw or started to get in the way of the jaws meeting. If timely intervention is not made and purulent periodontitis of the tooth is allowed, the little one may have a sharp rise in body temperature to high values, noticeable swelling of the soft tissue of the cheek (a flux), and near the affected tooth a characteristic white bubble — a fistula — forms on the child's gum, from which pus is discharged.
It's important to distinguish periodontitis from ordinary pulpitis. If with nerve inflammation the pain is intermittent, then with damage to the periodontal tissue the pain becomes localised. The little one can point exactly to a specific diseased tooth that reacts unbearably to any mechanical touch.
In some complex cases the condition runs completely without symptoms and is only detected by chance, when routine diagnostics of periodontitis in children (for example, an X-ray) are carried out. Attentive and regular preventive examination of every tooth in a child lets our doctors detect a hidden problem in time, without waiting for flare-ups.
The biggest danger of this disease is that extensive purulent inflammation directly threatens the formation of the future healthy smile. Right beneath the roots of the temporary teeth, in the jawbone, sits the bud from which a strong permanent tooth should grow in a few years. If comprehensive treatment of periodontitis isn't started in time, the pus can irreversibly damage or completely destroy the bud of the permanent tooth. As a result the temporary bite will change to a permanent one with serious anatomical defects, or the tooth won't grow at all.
If periodontitis of a front tooth develops, speech additionally suffers, biting food is impaired, and the aesthetics of the smile too, which leads to psychological complexes. When parents ignore the problem of periodontitis, the baby tooth quickly becomes a dangerous focus of infection in the whole body. This causes serious complications for the work of the fragile immune system, the kidneys, the heart muscle and the child's gastrointestinal tract.
When a little one's tooth hurts, the treatment should be selected by our specialists strictly individually. In children's dental practice, exactly which therapy will be used is decided by the treating doctor solely on the basis of a detailed 3D image. Quality treatment can be carried out in completely different ways, depending on the degree of destruction of the bone tissue. It is extremely important to diagnose the stage and depth of periodontitis of the child's tooth with great precision.
The doctors of Inwhite Medical Kids always try to use a gentle, conservative approach when saving baby teeth. If the root hasn't yet begun its physiological process of dissolving, and there is more than a year and a half or two years until the natural change in the row of teeth, the classic endodontic method is used:
- Under reliable isolation with a rubber dam, the doctor thoroughly cleans the infected root canals of affected tissue.
- Neutralises the pathogenic flora with special potent antiseptics.
- Places a medicinal paste inside, which over time will safely dissolve along with the tooth root.
- The crown part is reliably restored with a filling or a children's crown for perfect sealing.
Successful treatment of periodontitis in children on a baby tooth makes it possible to fully preserve the jaw's chewing function. Every tooth saved this way reliably holds the space for its permanent successor.
Very unfortunately, sometimes at the late stages of advanced periodontitis, treatment by therapeutic means becomes no longer sensible and even dangerous. If the inflammation has captured a large area of bone around the tooth, the root has physiologically dissolved by more than half its length, and the tooth wobbles badly and painfully, an unavoidable surgical stage is prescribed — the careful removal of the problem tooth in the child.
Emergency extraction is also absolutely unavoidable if the image shows a direct threat to the developing bud of the permanent tooth. At our advanced clinic we respond as quickly, carefully and painlessly as possible to every urgent request from worried parents for emergency dental care.

- If needed, consultations with a paediatrician and specialists are carried out.
During treatment under general anaesthesia in children, a full-time experienced anaesthetist-resuscitator is always continuously present in the room, who, using modern resuscitation equipment and sensors, monitors the heart rate and pressure, strictly controlling the patient's condition at all stages. This is a modern standard that doesn't harm the body, has a minimum of contraindications and makes it possible to carry out a huge amount of work in just one visit.
